Amylmetacresol + 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol is a local antiseptic combination commonly used in lozenges for sore throat, throat irritation and discomfort in the mouth or throat. The substances act locally on the contact area, while slowly sucking the lozenge helps lubricate the mucosa and soothe soreness or burning.

The lozenge should be allowed to dissolve slowly in the mouth and should not be chewed or swallowed whole. The maximum dose and interval between doses depend on the product and age, so the leaflet should be followed. If symptoms do not improve after a few days, worsen, or are associated with high fever and feeling very unwell, medical advice is needed.

Side effects are usually uncommon and may include local irritation, burning sensation, mild numbness, nausea, stomach discomfort, rash or allergic reactions. Some lozenges contain sugar, sweeteners, colours, flavours, gluten or other excipients relevant for diabetes, intolerances or allergies. Young children may be at risk of choking with lozenges.

Seek medical help if breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread rash, severe pain on swallowing, pus on the tonsils, persistent fever or symptoms lasting more than 3 days occur. This treatment relieves local symptoms, but it does not replace assessment of bacterial infection, severe tonsillitis or other important causes.
