Diacerein is a medication used for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis, particularly to reduce pain and slow the progression of the disease. It belongs to the class of drugs known as symptomatic slow-acting drugs for osteoarthritis (SYSADOA). It works by inhibiting interleukin-1 (IL-1), a cytokine involved in inflammation and cartilage degradation.

Diacerein is indicated for patients with osteoarthritis, especially those who cannot tolerate nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is taken orally, usually once or twice daily, and therapeutic effects develop gradually over several weeks of treatment.

Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and changes in stool color (which may become dark yellow). Rarely, allergic reactions or liver dysfunction may occur, requiring periodic monitoring of liver function.

Diacerein should be used as directed by a doctor, and patients should be informed that the beneficial effects develop gradually. Long-term use without medical supervision should be avoided.
