About this active substance
Nimesulide is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat acute pain, inflammation, and fever. It is indicated for conditions such as muscle pain, joint pain, arthritis, dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain), and other types of acute pain. Nimesulide works by selectively inhibiting the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins, substances involved in inflammation and pain.
It is administered orally, usually in the form of tablets or granules for suspension, with a recommended dose of 100 mg twice daily, after meals, to minimize the risk of gastric irritation. The duration of treatment should be as short as possible, typically no longer than 15 days.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and dizziness. In rare cases, it may cause more serious reactions, such as liver damage, severe allergic reactions, or gastrointestinal disorders like ulcers or bleeding.
Nimesulide is contraindicated in patients with severe liver impairment, severe kidney impairment, active gastric ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, or hypersensitivity to the drug. It is also not recommended for children under 12 years of age, pregnant women, or breastfeeding mothers. Patients should follow their doctor's recommendations and not exceed the prescribed dose.
