Indicated for: bacterial infections
Route of administration: oral
Substance: tetracycline (tetracycline antibiotic)
ATC: J01AA07 (Antiinfectives for systemic use | Tetracyclines)
Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections caused by a variety of microorganisms. It is effective against respiratory infections, skin infections, genitourinary infections, vector-borne diseases (such as typhus or Lyme disease), and severe acne. It belongs to the tetracycline class of antibiotics, which work by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby preventing bacterial growth and reproduction.
Tetracycline is taken orally, usually 2-4 times a day, at least one hour before or two hours after meals, to avoid interactions with foods or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, or iron, which can reduce the drug's absorption.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, sensitivity to light (photosensitivity), and, in rare cases, liver damage or allergic reactions. Tetracycline is contraindicated in children under 8 years old and pregnant women, as it can affect tooth and bone development, causing permanent tooth discoloration.
