About this active substance
Bismuth subcitrate + metronidazole + tetracycline is used in adults to eradicate Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with stomach and duodenal ulcers. Bismuth and the two antibiotics act together against the organism. Treatment is combined with omeprazole, which reduces stomach acid and supports ulcer healing.
Take the capsules in divided doses after meals and at bedtime, usually for 10 days, as prescribed. Swallow them whole with a large glass of water and do not lie down immediately afterwards. Do not take them at the same time as dairy products, antacids, iron or zinc supplements. Complete the course and do not double missed doses.
Possible side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, metallic taste and darkening of stools or the tongue. Bismuth-related colouring is usually harmless, but black stools with weakness or dizziness need assessment. Avoid intense sunlight. Severe diarrhoea, persistent tingling or blistering rashes require prompt medical advice.
Avoid alcohol during treatment and afterwards for the period stated in the leaflet. The combination is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding and in kidney or liver impairment. Tell the doctor if you take anticoagulants, lithium or retinoids. Breathing difficulty, facial swelling or vomiting blood requires urgent help.
