Amylmetacresol + 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol + levomenthol is usually used in lozenges for short-term relief of sore throat and throat irritation, often during mild colds or uncomplicated pharyngitis. The first two ingredients act as local antiseptics, while levomenthol gives a cooling sensation and may temporarily ease discomfort when swallowing.
The lozenge should be allowed to dissolve slowly in the mouth and should not be chewed. Follow the interval between doses and the maximum daily dose stated in the leaflet, because very frequent use may irritate the mouth or increase intake of sugars or polyols, depending on the product. It is not suitable for young children who may choke on lozenges unless the leaflet clearly allows it.
Side effects are usually local and uncommon: mouth stinging, mild numbness, nausea, irritation, rash, itching or allergic reactions. If the product contains sweeteners, it may cause abdominal discomfort or a laxative effect in some people. Severe sore throat, pus on the tonsils, high fever or major swallowing difficulty should not be treated only with lozenges.
Contact a doctor if symptoms last more than a few days, worsen, or if high fever, breathing difficulty, widespread rash, facial swelling or trouble swallowing occurs. People with known allergy to antiseptics, menthol, flavours or colourants should check the leaflet carefully. This treatment provides symptomatic relief, but it does not replace medical assessment when infection appears severe.
