Indicated for: cold symptoms; nasal congestion; oropharyngeal irritation
Route of administration: oromucosal
Substance: benzalkonium chloride + levomenthol + essential oils (quaternary antiseptic and decongestant terpenes)
ATC: R02AA06 (Respiratory system | Throat preparations | Antiseptics)
Use in children only as recommended in the leaflet or by a doctor.
Benzalkonium chloride + levomenthol + essential oils is a combination used in some local products for hygiene or relief of irritation in the mouth, throat or nasal passages, depending on the pharmaceutical form. Benzalkonium chloride has a surface antiseptic role, while levomenthol and essential oils provide a cooling sensation and a feeling of easier breathing.
The product should be used only on the area for which it is intended: lozenges, sprays, solutions and nasal preparations can have different rules. Follow the dose and duration in the leaflet and do not apply it to damaged mucosa, deep wounds or the eyes. In young children there may be choking, irritation or reactions to menthol and volatile oils, so the minimum age in the leaflet matters.
Possible side effects include stinging, burning sensation, dryness, sneezing, local irritation, nausea, reflex cough, rash or allergic reactions. Essential oils and menthol may be irritating in sensitive people, and benzalkonium chloride can cause contact dermatitis. Excessive use may worsen irritation instead of soothing it, especially on already inflamed mucosa.
Stop use and contact a doctor if breathing difficulty, wheezing, facial swelling, widespread rash, intense pain, bleeding, high fever or pus-like discharge occurs. Persistent throat or nasal symptoms may need a different diagnosis, especially in children, pregnancy, asthma or people with allergies. The product offers local relief, not treatment for severe infections.
