Aescin is a mixture of compounds from horse chestnut seeds, used for anti-inflammatory, anti-oedema and vein-protective effects. It may be found in oral products or gels for heavy legs, swelling, pain linked to venous insufficiency, minor injuries, sprains or bruises. It does not treat every cause of swelling, so a correct diagnosis is important.

The way it is used depends on the pharmaceutical form. Gels are applied thinly to intact skin, without aggressive massage over painful areas. Tablets or capsules should be taken as recommended in the leaflet or by a healthcare professional. When appropriate, it may be combined with movement, leg elevation, weight control and compression stockings.

Possible side effects include nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, dizziness, itching or skin rash. Topical products may cause irritation, redness or local allergic reactions. Aescin should be used cautiously in people with kidney or liver disease, bleeding disorders, anticoagulant treatment or regular anti-inflammatory medicines. It must not be applied to wounds, mucous membranes or infected skin.

Seek medical help if swelling appears suddenly, affects only one leg, or is associated with severe pain, redness, warmth, shortness of breath or chest pain. These signs may suggest thrombosis. If symptoms persist, worsen or allergic reactions occur, treatment should be stopped and the situation assessed by a doctor.
