Propamidine is an antiseptic used as propamidine isetionate eye drops for some minor eye infections, such as conjunctivitis or inflammation of the eyelid margins. It inhibits certain microorganisms but does not treat every cause of a red eye. Pain or visual changes require assessment rather than self-treatment.
Use the drops only in the eyes, following the leaflet or medical advice. Wash your hands and avoid touching the eye with the dropper tip. Do not share the bottle. Avoid contact lenses during treatment unless your clinician agrees, and observe the stated expiry period after opening.
Stinging, burning, irritation, eye pain or allergic reactions can occur. Preservatives in some products can worsen dry eyes. Stop using the drops and seek medical advice if pain or irritation develops. Vision may become temporarily blurred: do not drive or use machinery until it is clear.
If there is no significant improvement within two days, or symptoms worsen, stop treatment and consult a doctor. Reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, an injury or substantial swelling needs urgent assessment. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, use only if a doctor considers it necessary. A painful red eye in a contact-lens wearer should be examined promptly.
