Asian ginseng, Panax ginseng, is a herbal product traditionally used for fatigue, weakness and reduced capacity for effort or concentration during demanding periods. The root contains ginsenosides, compounds considered responsible for part of its effects. It is not a universally safe stimulant and does not treat fatigue caused by serious disease.
It is taken by mouth as capsules, tablets, extract or tea, according to the leaflet. Use for limited periods followed by reassessment is advisable. Avoid evening use if insomnia occurs. If fatigue is persistent, severe or associated with weight loss, fever, marked low mood or palpitations, medical assessment is needed.
Side effects may include insomnia, nervousness, headache, digestive upset, diarrhoea, palpitations, blood pressure changes or rash. Ginseng may interact with anticoagulants, diabetes medicines, stimulants, caffeine, immunosuppressants and some psychiatric treatments. People with diabetes, hypertension, rhythm disorders, autoimmune disease or hormone-sensitive cancer should seek medical advice.
Stop use and contact a doctor if important palpitations, chest pain, hypoglycaemia, severe agitation, persistent insomnia, allergic reactions or unusual bleeding occurs. During pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood, ginseng should be avoided unless medically recommended. It may support vitality in mild situations, but it does not replace diagnosis.
