About this active substance
Idebenone is used for visual impairment caused by Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, a rare optic nerve disorder, in adults and adolescents aged 12 or over. It acts on energy production in mitochondria and may help some affected cells function better. Recovery of sight is not guaranteed.
It is taken by mouth three times daily with food, as prescribed. Swallow tablets whole; food increases absorption. Treatment is supervised by a doctor experienced in this condition and requires regular eye examinations. Benefit is assessed over time, not after just a few doses.
Possible adverse effects include diarrhoea, cough, cold-like symptoms and back pain. Metabolites can give urine a reddish-brown colour without necessarily indicating blood. Nevertheless, tell the doctor about any change in urine colour so that a kidney or urinary problem is not overlooked.
Inform the doctor about liver or kidney disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding and all medicines used, as interactions are possible.
