About this active substance
Pyritinol is a vitamin B6 derivative used in some countries for cognitive complaints, concentration difficulties or mental fatigue when a doctor considers it appropriate. It is not an emergency treatment and should not be regarded as a generally safe “brain stimulant”. Its usefulness depends on the cause of symptoms, age, other illnesses and the treatment plan.
It is taken by mouth, usually during or after meals, exactly as prescribed. If benefit occurs, it may take several weeks, so the dose or duration should not be changed without medical advice. If memory problems, attention difficulties or confusion worsen, reassessment is important because symptoms may have neurological, metabolic, psychiatric or medicine-related causes.
Possible side effects include nausea, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, headache, restlessness, insomnia, itching or skin rash. Less commonly, allergic reactions, liver problems, pancreatitis or immune-type reactions have been reported. Risk may be higher in people with important drug allergies or sensitivity to chemically related substances.
Contact a doctor if severe rash, fever, intense abdominal pain, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent itching, facial swelling or breathing difficulty occur. Pyritinol should be used only on medical recommendation, especially in children, pregnancy, liver disease, autoimmune disease or when several medicines are taken. It does not replace a proper diagnosis for cognitive symptoms.
