Gelatin is an animal-derived protein used in different medical preparations. Modified gelatin solutions are infused to temporarily replace circulating volume after selected fluid or blood losses. They do not carry oxygen and do not replace red blood cells. Separately, absorbable gelatin sponges help control local bleeding during surgery.
Healthcare staff choose and administer the intravenous solution according to circulatory status and available alternatives. Blood pressure, pulse, urine output, electrolytes and clotting are monitored. Haemostatic sponges serve a different purpose and must not be placed inside blood vessels. Food gelatin cannot replace either sterile medical product.
Nausea, rash and allergic reactions can occur, sometimes severe, including anaphylactic shock. Excess infusion volumes may overload the circulation and dilute clotting factors, increasing bleeding. Particular care is needed with kidney disease, heart failure or clotting disorders.
Immediately report widespread itching, hives, facial swelling, throat tightness, shortness of breath or fainting. Tell the team about allergy to gelatin or red meat, or alpha-gal syndrome, before administration: some solutions are contraindicated in these situations. Mention pregnancy and all treatments. Do not self-administer injectable gelatin products.
