Erdosteine is a mucolytic medication used in the treatment of respiratory conditions characterized by excessive production of thick mucus, such as chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other obstructive lung diseases. It helps to thin mucus, making it easier to expel through coughing.

Erdosteine works by breaking the disulfide bonds in the mucus structure, thereby reducing its viscosity. Additionally, it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, protecting the airways from the harmful effects of free radicals and chronic inflammation.

The medication is available in the form of capsules, tablets, or granules for oral suspension and is usually taken 2-3 times a day, as directed by a doctor.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or mild allergic reactions (such as skin rashes). In rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur.
