About this active substance

Bromhexine is a mucolytic medicine used for chesty, productive cough when airway mucus is thick and difficult to clear. It helps thin bronchial secretions so they can be coughed up more easily. It is not meant for a dry, irritating cough without mucus, and treatment should match the real cause of symptoms, especially if fever, breathing difficulty or chest pain is present.

It is usually taken by mouth as tablets, drops or syrup, according to age and the instructions from the leaflet or doctor. Drinking enough fluids can support the mucolytic effect because secretions become easier to move. It should not be combined without medical advice with cough suppressants that block the cough reflex, since the loosened mucus needs to be cleared from the airways.

Side effects are usually mild and may include nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, dizziness, headache or an unpleasant taste. Rarely, allergic reactions, skin rash, itching, swelling of the face or breathing problems may occur. People with a history of stomach ulcer, asthma, significant liver disease or kidney disease should ask a doctor or pharmacist before using it.

Seek medical advice if the cough lasts more than a few days, or if high fever, blood in sputum, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain or worsening general condition occurs. Bromhexine helps clear mucus, but it does not always treat the underlying infection or inflammation.
