Risk of severe allergic reaction. Seek urgent medical help if serious symptoms occur.

Chlorhexidine + tetracaine is a combination used for local relief of mild sore throat, mouth irritation or small mucosal lesions. Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic that reduces local microbial load, while tetracaine is a local anaesthetic that temporarily reduces pain by numbing the area. The product is symptomatic; it does not replace antibiotics when a significant bacterial infection is present.

It is usually used as lozenges or sucking tablets that dissolve slowly in the mouth. They should not be chewed or swallowed whole. Follow the dose, interval and duration in the package leaflet. After use, it is sensible to avoid very hot food and drinks, because numbness can make burns or accidental biting more likely.

Possible side effects include excessive numbness, altered taste, irritation, burning sensation, local dryness or nausea. Chlorhexidine may temporarily stain teeth or the tongue in some people, especially with repeated use. Tetracaine can cause allergic reactions in patients sensitive to local anaesthetics, and very frequent use may irritate the mucosa.

Consult a doctor if sore throat is severe, lasts more than a few days, keeps returning or is accompanied by fever, breathing difficulty, swallowing difficulty, rash, large lymph nodes or pus on the tonsils. Stop the product if facial swelling, hives or difficult breathing occur. In children, pregnancy or people with important allergies, ask for medical advice before use.
