Verapamil is a medication used to treat high blood pressure, angina (chest pain caused by insufficient blood flow to the heart), and certain heart rhythm disorders, such as atrial fibrillation or supraventricular tachycardia. It belongs to the class of calcium channel blockers, working by relaxing blood vessels and reducing the workload on the heart.

Verapamil is available in immediate-release or extended-release tablet forms and can be taken one to three times daily, depending on the formulation and medical indication. It should be taken as prescribed by the doctor, with or without food.

Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, constipation, nausea, and, in some cases, excessive lowering of blood pressure. Rarely, it may cause heart failure or worsen heart rhythm disorders, which is why careful monitoring is necessary.

Patients taking verapamil should avoid consuming grapefruit, as it can interfere with the drug's metabolism, increasing the risk of side effects. It is also important to inform the doctor about other medications being used, as verapamil can interact with certain drugs, such as beta-blockers or digoxin.
