About this active substance
Hydrotalcite is an antacid containing aluminium and magnesium, used to relieve heartburn and stomach discomfort linked to excess acid. It neutralises stomach acid and provides symptomatic relief. It does not replace assessment for an ulcer or treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection.
It is taken by mouth in the form and dose specified in the leaflet. Chewable tablets should be chewed thoroughly, usually between meals and at bedtime. It can reduce absorption of other medicines, including some antibiotics. Follow the spacing advised by the pharmacist, generally 1–2 hours, and avoid taking it with acidic drinks.
Loose stools, diarrhoea, constipation or vomiting can occur, particularly at higher doses. Prolonged use can lower phosphate levels, and aluminium and magnesium may accumulate in kidney disease. Do not use it in severe kidney failure. Ask for advice if you have low phosphate, myasthenia gravis or other kidney problems.
See a doctor if symptoms last beyond 14 days or recur frequently. Vomiting blood, black stools or severe pain require prompt assessment. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, use only after medical advice and for short periods. Follow the age limit in the leaflet and do not increase the dose to conceal persistent symptoms.
