About this active substance
Doxapram is a respiratory stimulant used in hospital for selected forms of inadequate breathing, for example after anaesthesia or temporarily in certain cases of respiratory failure associated with chronic lung disease. It stimulates mechanisms controlling breathing but does not remove an obstruction from the airway.
It is given intravenously by healthcare staff, with monitoring of oxygenation, blood gases, blood pressure and heart rhythm. Use is short term, and the underlying cause must be treated separately. It does not replace oxygen, keeping the airway clear or assisted ventilation when these measures are required.
Possible adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, sweating, tingling, agitation, headache, palpitations and increased blood pressure. Seizures, abnormal heart rhythms or laryngeal and bronchial spasms can occur. It is unsuitable for people with epilepsy, severe hypertension or certain cardiac and neurological conditions.
Tell the care team immediately about chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, intense agitation or worsening breathing. Inform the doctor about previous seizures, head injury, heart disease, pregnancy and all medicines used. Doxapram is not intended for self-treatment of tiredness or a feeling of breathlessness.
