About this active substance

Dimenhydrinate is an antihistamine used to prevent and relieve nausea, vomiting and dizziness caused by motion sickness. It acts on signals involved in balance and the vomiting reflex. It is sometimes prescribed for vertigo, but persistent dizziness requires assessment of its cause.

Use the formulation and dose in the leaflet. For travel, the first oral dose is usually taken 30–60 minutes beforehand. In children, the appropriate product and dose depend on age and weight. Do not use it to make a child sleep, and do not combine several antihistamine-containing medicines without professional advice.

It can cause marked drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness or impaired coordination. Children may instead become unusually excited. Avoid alcohol; combining it with sedatives requires medical advice. Do not drive when affected. Older people are more vulnerable to confusion and falls.

Ask before use if you have glaucoma, difficulty urinating, breathing disorders or epilepsy, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Overdose can cause hallucinations, seizures or heart problems and is an emergency, particularly in children. Seek urgent help for severe palpitations, loss of consciousness or breathing difficulty.
