About this active substance
Cetirizine + pseudoephedrine is a combination used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis, especially when a blocked nose occurs together with sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching or watery eyes. Cetirizine is an antihistamine that reduces the allergic response, while pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that reduces swelling inside the nose and helps nasal breathing.
It is taken by mouth, usually for short periods, according to the advice of a doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the recommended dose. It may be unsuitable for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, overactive thyroid, glaucoma, prostate enlargement or recent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Tell your doctor about other medicines, including cold remedies.
Possible side effects include dry mouth, sleepiness or, conversely, agitation, insomnia, palpitations, increased blood pressure, headache, nausea and difficulty passing urine. Some people may feel dizzy or less alert. Pseudoephedrine can worsen anxiety, tremor or heart problems, and older patients may be more sensitive to its effects.
Seek urgent medical help if chest pain, irregular heartbeat, very high blood pressure, breathing difficulty, allergic reactions, confusion, seizures or inability to urinate occur. If allergy symptoms persist, worsen or are accompanied by fever and thick discoloured discharge, medical reassessment is needed. This combination relieves symptoms; it does not treat the underlying cause of allergy.
