Candesartan cilexetil is an antihypertensive medication that belongs to the class of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chronic heart failure, particularly in patients who cannot tolerate angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Candesartan works by blocking angiotensin II receptors, thereby preventing vasoconstriction and lowering blood pressure.

In the treatment of hypertension, candesartan helps reduce blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular complications such as heart attack or stroke. In heart failure, it improves cardiac function and reduces symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath.

Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, and nausea. In rare cases, more serious reactions such as hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels), kidney dysfunction, or allergic reactions may occur. Regular monitoring of kidney function and potassium levels is important, especially if the patient is taking other medications that affect electrolyte balance.
