About this active substance
Burosumab is a monoclonal antibody used for the treatment of X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), a rare genetic disorder characterized by low phosphate levels in the blood, leading to bone deformities, pain, and short stature. It works by inhibiting fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), a protein that reduces renal phosphate reabsorption and active vitamin D synthesis.
The medication is administered via subcutaneous injection, usually once every two or four weeks, as directed by a doctor. The treatment requires regular monitoring to assess phosphate levels and adjust the dosage if necessary.
Common side effects include injection site reactions, headache, nausea, and muscle pain. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions or excessive hypophosphatemia may occur.
Burosumab is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Patients should inform their doctor about all medications they are taking to avoid drug interactions. Additionally, it is important for patients to adhere to the monitoring schedule to prevent complications associated with the treatment.
