Zofenopril is a medicine used to lower high blood pressure and, in selected cases, after an acute myocardial infarction. It belongs to the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor class. It works by relaxing blood vessels, reducing the pressure against which the heart has to pump and helping protect the heart and kidneys over time.

It is taken by mouth, usually once daily, exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The dose may be increased gradually depending on blood pressure, age, kidney function, other treatments and tolerability. It should be taken regularly even when you feel well, because high blood pressure often causes no obvious symptoms but can still damage blood vessels and organs.

Possible side effects include dizziness, tiredness, headache, persistent dry cough, nausea, low blood pressure, taste changes, skin rash, increased potassium levels and changes in kidney blood tests. Dizziness is more likely when starting treatment, after a dose increase or if the patient is dehydrated or taking diuretics. Standing up slowly can reduce this risk.

Contact a doctor urgently if swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pain, markedly reduced urination or allergic reactions occur. Zofenopril must not be used during pregnancy. Extra caution is needed in people with kidney disease, renal artery narrowing, high potassium, heart failure or medicines that may affect kidney function or potassium levels.
