Camphor + levomenthol + eucalyptus oil + turpentine oil is an aromatic combination used locally for temporary relief of cold symptoms such as blocked nose, mild cough and a feeling of congestion. The volatile ingredients create a cooling sensation and may help the patient feel that breathing is easier, but they do not cure the infection.
The product is applied to the chest, throat or back according to the leaflet, or used for inhalation if that dosage form allows it. It must not be swallowed or applied inside the nose, on the face, mucous membranes, damaged skin or under tight dressings. Hands should be washed after use. In young children, use must be checked carefully because volatile oils can irritate the airways.
Possible side effects include local irritation, redness, stinging, watery eyes, increased cough, bronchospasm or allergic reactions. Accidental swallowing can be dangerous, especially in children, and may cause nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, agitation or seizures. People with asthma, epilepsy, sensitive skin or allergy to essential oils should use it with caution.
Seek medical help if breathing difficulty, wheezing, widespread rash, facial swelling, persistent fever, chest pain or worsening cough occurs. If the product is swallowed accidentally, contact a doctor or poison centre immediately. This medicine is only for symptomatic relief; fluids, rest and medical assessment are important when symptoms are severe or do not improve.
