Water for injections is a sterile pharmaceutical solvent used to dissolve or dilute compatible medicines. It is not a stand-alone treatment for dehydration and supplies neither electrolytes nor energy. Its purpose is to allow an injection or infusion to be prepared correctly, following the instructions for the medicine being added.
Healthcare staff determine the volume, final concentration and administration route. Preparation requires aseptic technique. Not all medicines can be diluted with water; some require saline or another solvent. Do not substitute the prescribed diluent or mix medicines without a compatibility check.
Water for injections must not be injected into a vein on its own: its very low dissolved-solute content can destroy red blood cells, causing haemolysis. Other risks depend on the added medicine, an incorrect concentration, contamination or administration problems. A clear solution does not guarantee a safe mixture.
Use only intact containers within their expiry date. Single-use ampoules should be used immediately after opening and leftovers discarded as instructed. Ordinary distilled water and tap water are not substitutes. Alert healthcare staff immediately if an injection is followed by chills, fever, pain or swelling at the site, dark urine or shortness of breath.
