Histrelin is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist used for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer and precocious puberty. It works by reducing the production of testosterone or estrogen, thereby suppressing the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors.
The medication is administered as a subcutaneous implant, as directed by a doctor. The implant gradually releases the drug over several months.
Side effects may include hot flashes, headache, decreased libido, or reactions at the implantation site. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur.
Histrelin is not recommended for patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or pregnant women.
