Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation associated with various conditions. It is effective for managing muscle pain, joint pain, back pain, arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, menstrual pain, and other inflammatory conditions.
It works by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, substances involved in inflammation and pain, thereby reducing inflammation, fever, and pain. Diclofenac is available in the form of tablets, capsules, gels, patches, suppositories, and injectable solutions.
Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, heartburn, diarrhea, dizziness, or, rarely, allergic reactions. Long-term use or high doses may increase the risk of gastric ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney damage, or cardiovascular events.
Diclofenac is contraindicated in patients with NSAID allergies, active gastric ulcers, severe renal failure, liver failure, or severe heart failure. It is important to use it as directed by a healthcare provider.
