Ornidazole is an antimicrobial medication used to treat infections caused by protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. It belongs to the nitroimidazole class and works by damaging the DNA of susceptible microorganisms, thereby inhibiting their growth and reproduction.

It is indicated for the treatment of conditions such as trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amoebiasis, and anaerobic bacterial infections, including those associated with abscesses, peritonitis, gynecological infections, or dental infections. Ornidazole can also be used prophylactically to prevent postoperative infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.

Side effects may include nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, or, in rare cases, allergic reactions. In isolated cases, neurological disturbances such as seizures or confusion may occur, especially at high doses or with prolonged treatment. It is important to take ornidazole as prescribed by a healthcare provider, and alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment and for a few days afterward to prevent adverse reactions.
