Carbamazepine is a medication primarily used to treat epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, and bipolar disorder. It is an anticonvulsant that helps prevent seizures and reduce neuropathic pain.
Carbamazepine is effective in controlling focal and tonic-clonic seizures and is often used as a first-line treatment. It is also indicated for managing severe pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia and for mood stabilization in bipolar disorder.
Side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, blurred vision, or allergic reactions. In rare cases, it can cause severe reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or bone marrow suppression. It is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity to the substance or when combined with certain medications.
