Gentian + primrose + sorrel + elder + vervain is a herbal combination used in products for sinus inflammation and thick nasal secretions. The plants may help thin mucus and support drainage from the upper airways. Use is symptomatic and does not replace antibiotics when a bacterial infection is confirmed or when serious complications are suspected.
It is taken by mouth as coated tablets, drops or syrup, according to the leaflet. The minimum age, dose and recommended duration must be respected for the specific product. Hydration, saline nasal rinses and rest may help. If symptoms last more than a few days, worsen or recur frequently, medical assessment is needed.
Side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, heartburn, unpleasant taste, rash or allergic reactions. Drops may contain alcohol, and some products may contain sugar or other relevant excipients. Caution is advised in patients with stomach ulcer, severe reflux, liver disease, plant allergies or several concomitant medicines.
Seek medical advice urgently if high fever, severe facial pain, swelling around the eyes, visual disturbance, stiff neck, confusion, breathing difficulty or persistent purulent nasal discharge occurs. During pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood, only a suitable product should be used, preferably with medical advice. Severe sinusitis may require different treatment.
