The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, which protects against types 6, 11, 16, and 18, is used to prevent HPV infections and associated conditions such as genital warts and cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, and anus. Types 16 and 18 are responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases, while types 6 and 11 cause most genital warts.
The vaccine is administered intramuscularly, usually in three doses over a six-month period, and is recommended for both girls and boys starting at ages 9-12, before exposure to the virus.
Common side effects include pain at the injection site, mild fever, headache, and fatigue. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur.
The HPV vaccine (types 6, 11, 16, and 18) is an essential measure for preventing HPV-associated cancers and other conditions, helping to reduce the burden of diseases caused by this virus.
