The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is used to prevent infections caused by certain types of HPV, which can lead to cervical cancer, other genital cancers, anal cancer, and genital warts. It is especially recommended for adolescents and young adults before exposure to the virus through sexual contact.
The vaccine is effective in preventing infections with high-risk HPV types responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. It also provides protection against HPV types that cause genital warts.
It is usually administered in two or three doses, depending on age and vaccination schedule. The vaccine is well-tolerated, with side effects generally being mild, such as pain at the injection site, mild fever, or fatigue.
HPV vaccination is considered an important preventive measure to reduce the risk of cervical cancer and other HPV-related conditions. It is recommended for both girls and boys to ensure broad protection within the population.
