Pyridoxine, or vitamin B6, contributes to protein metabolism, haemoglobin formation and nervous system function. As a medicine, it treats vitamin B6 deficiency and selected conditions, including nerve problems associated with isoniazid. It is not a universal treatment for tiredness, stress or tingling without identifying the cause.
It is usually taken by mouth, with dose and duration depending on the indication, age and other medicines. High therapeutic doses require supervision and should not be copied for routine supplementation. Check all products being used: multivitamins and some magnesium combinations already contain vitamin B6.
Prolonged excess can damage peripheral nerves, causing numbness, tingling, burning sensations or unsteady walking. Supplementation can therefore cause the very symptoms a person is trying to treat. Being water-soluble does not make every dose safe; do not increase the dose when symptoms persist.
If new neurological symptoms develop while taking non-prescribed supplements, stop the supplement and seek medical advice. Discuss adjustments to prescribed treatment with the doctor. Pyridoxine can reduce the effect of levodopa taken without carbidopa or benserazide; report all medicines, including antiepileptics. During pregnancy and in children, use only recommended doses.
