Cetylpyridinium chloride + benzocaine is a combination used for temporary relief of pain and discomfort in the throat or mouth. Cetylpyridinium chloride is a local antiseptic that reduces some microorganisms on the mucosa, while benzocaine is a local anaesthetic that numbs the painful area. It is mainly useful for mild sore throat, irritation and superficial mouth lesions.

It is usually used as lozenges that dissolve slowly in the mouth and should not be chewed or swallowed whole. Follow the recommended interval between doses and the maximum number of lozenges per day. After using it, avoid food or drinks for a short time, because numbness may increase the risk of accidental biting or choking.

Possible side effects include burning sensation, excessive numbness, local irritation, nausea, altered taste or allergic reactions. Benzocaine can rarely cause methaemoglobinaemia, a condition in which the blood carries less oxygen. Warning signs may include bluish lips, breathing difficulty, extreme tiredness, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat.

Seek medical advice if sore throat is severe, lasts more than a few days, keeps returning or is accompanied by fever, pus on the tonsils, rash, breathing difficulty or swallowing problems. Do not use it in young children unless a healthcare professional recommends it. People allergic to local anaesthetics or to any ingredient should avoid this product.
