Do not take with milk, calcium, iron, magnesium, or antacids if separation is recommended.
Calcium carbonate + magnesium carbonate is an antacid combination used for heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion and the feeling of excess stomach acid. The two salts neutralise gastric acid and can provide relatively quick relief. They do not treat the underlying cause of reflux or abdominal pain, but can temporarily reduce discomfort after meals or when symptoms occur.
It is taken by mouth, often as chewable tablets or according to the available dosage form, following the leaflet instructions. It should not be used continuously for long periods without medical assessment. If symptoms persist for more than 1-2 weeks, occur frequently at night, worsen, or are associated with weight loss, vomiting, blood or difficulty swallowing, a doctor should be consulted.
Side effects may include bloating, belching, constipation from calcium or diarrhoea from magnesium. High doses can affect calcium and magnesium levels, especially in people with kidney disease. Antacids may reduce the absorption of several medicines, including tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, levothyroxine, iron, digoxin and bisphosphonates.
Take other medicines at a separate time from the antacid, usually by 2-4 hours if recommended by a doctor or pharmacist. Ask for advice before use if you have kidney failure, kidney stones, high calcium levels, a strict sodium diet or heart treatment. Chest pain, shortness of breath, cold sweats or pain spreading to the arm should not be treated as simple indigestion.
