Octenidine is an antiseptic that reduces microorganisms at the application site. Depending on the product, it is found in solutions for skin, superficial wounds or certain mucous membranes, and in lozenges for mouth and throat inflammation. These forms are not interchangeable and do not replace treatment of a deep infection.
Use only the route specified in the leaflet. Skin solutions must not be swallowed and should be kept away from the eyes; lozenges dissolve slowly in the mouth. Never inject solutions or force them under pressure into deep wounds, cavities or tissues, as serious injury can result. Ask for medical advice before irrigating a wound.
Stinging, redness, itching, irritation or allergic reactions may occur. Some oral forms can leave an unpleasant taste. Do not mix with other antiseptics, particularly iodine products, and follow the recommended duration. Solutions may contain other active ingredients; safety depends on the formulation, strength and treated area.
Stop use and seek help for facial swelling, breathlessness, intense pain or progressive wound swelling. Fever, pus or spreading redness needs medical assessment. Persistent sore throat or difficulty swallowing also requires review. Follow the minimum age and ask for advice during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
