Rifaximin is an antibiotic used to treat intestinal infections caused by bacteria, as well as to reduce the risk of recurrent hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver conditions. It works locally in the intestine, with minimal absorption into the bloodstream, which lowers the risk of systemic side effects.
It is effective in treating diarrhea caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli and is also used for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea predominance.
Rifaximin is generally well-tolerated but may cause side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, or bloating. Patients should follow the prescribed treatment and avoid stopping the medication before completing the full course.
This medication is not effective against viral infections and should not be used without a specialist's recommendation.
