Nitroglycerin is a medication primarily used for the treatment and prevention of angina pectoris (chest pain caused by insufficient blood flow to the heart). It belongs to the class of organic nitrates and works by relaxing and dilating blood vessels, improving blood flow to the heart and reducing its workload.

Nitroglycerin is available in various forms, including sublingual tablets, sprays, transdermal patches, ointments, and intravenous solutions. Sublingual tablets and sprays are used for rapid relief of angina pain, while patches and ointments are used to prevent angina episodes.

Common side effects include headaches, dizziness, low blood pressure (hypotension), facial flushing, and nausea. In rare cases, it may cause allergic reactions or severe hypotension.

Nitroglycerin is contraindicated in patients taking phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (such as sildenafil), as the combination can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure. It is also not recommended in cases of severe hypotension, severe anemia, or recent myocardial infarction without medical supervision.
