Prednisolone + neomycin combines an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid with an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It is used locally, depending on the product form, for inflammation of the eye, ear or skin when there is also risk or evidence of susceptible bacterial infection. Prednisolone reduces redness and swelling, while neomycin acts against bacteria.

It should be applied strictly according to medical advice and the leaflet. It must not be used for viral, fungal or tuberculous infections and should not be prolonged without review, because the steroid can mask worsening infection. If it is an eye product, contact lenses should be avoided during infection and the bottle tip should not touch the eye or skin.

Side effects may include stinging, burning, irritation, itching, dryness or allergy to neomycin. Prolonged ocular use of corticosteroids can increase intraocular pressure, promote cataract or delay corneal healing. On the skin, long-term use may thin the skin and worsen infections. The risk increases when applied to large areas or under occlusion.

Contact a doctor if pain increases, vision decreases, heavy discharge, swelling, severe rash, dizziness, hearing problems or lack of improvement occurs. Do not use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or in children without medical advice. The combination can be useful when the indication is correct, but may be unsuitable and risky if inflammation has another cause.
