Indicated for: nasal congestion; rhinitis
Substance: tramazoline (adrenergic decongestant)
ATC: R01AA09 (Respiratory system | Decongestants and other nasal preparations for topical use | Sympathomimetics, plain)
Tramazoline is a nasal decongestant used to relieve nasal congestion associated with acute rhinitis, sinusitis, or other respiratory conditions. It works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal mucosa, causing vasoconstriction and reducing swelling.
Tramazoline is available as a nasal spray or drops and is administered locally, usually 2-3 times a day, for a limited period (maximum 7 days) to avoid the risk of rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa).
Common side effects include nasal dryness, a burning sensation, or local irritation. In rare cases, systemic adverse reactions such as hypertension, tachycardia, or insomnia may occur, especially with excessive use. It is important for patients to follow the recommended dosage and avoid prolonged use.
Tramazoline is an effective and well-tolerated option for the rapid relief of nasal congestion, contributing to improved breathing and patient comfort.
