Electrolyte disturbances

This medicine may change blood electrolyte levels.

Macrogol + sodium chloride + sodium hydrogen carbonate + potassium chloride is used for constipation and, in some regimens, faecal impaction. Macrogol is an osmotic laxative that softens stool by retaining water in the bowel, while the salts help maintain sodium, potassium and water balance during treatment.

It is taken by mouth, usually as powder dissolved in water, according to the leaflet. The solution must be prepared with the correct amount of water and drunk at the recommended pace. The effect often appears within 1–2 days, but this can vary. Do not use continuously without medical assessment if the problem persists or frequently returns.

Side effects may include bloating, gas, abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhoea, bowel noises, anal discomfort or vomiting. Severe diarrhoea can cause dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, especially in older, frail patients or people with kidney disease, heart disease or diuretic treatment. Other medicines may be absorbed less well if taken at the same time.

Consult a doctor if severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, swollen abdomen, blood in stool, fever, weight loss, new unexplained constipation or lack of effect occurs. During pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood and chronic illness, seek medical advice. Hydration, fibre, physical activity and a regular toilet routine remain important.
