Lovastatin is a medication used to lower high cholesterol levels and prevent cardiovascular diseases. It belongs to a class of drugs known as statins, which work by inhibiting an enzyme involved in cholesterol production in the liver.

Lovastatin is prescribed for patients with hypercholesterolemia or at high risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack or stroke. The medication is usually taken once daily in the evening to maximize its effects.

Side effects may include muscle pain, nausea, headaches, or elevated liver enzymes. In rare cases, serious adverse effects such as rhabdomyolysis, a condition involving muscle tissue breakdown, may occur.

Patients taking lovastatin should avoid excessive alcohol consumption and inform their doctor about any other medications or supplements they are taking. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication.
