Use during pregnancy only on medical advice.
Hydrocortisone butyrate is a topical corticosteroid used for eczema, dermatitis and certain forms of psoriasis. It reduces inflammation, redness and itching. It is more potent than plain hydrocortisone, so these medicines should not be substituted without advice. It does not treat the cause of a skin infection.
Apply the cream or ointment thinly to the prescribed areas, usually once or twice daily, as directed. Keep it away from the eyes and eyelids. Use on the face, in skin folds or under dressings requires medical advice because absorption increases. In children, the treated area and treatment duration should be limited.
Possible side effects include stinging, irritation, itching or allergy. Prolonged use may cause skin thinning, stretch marks and visible small blood vessels. Use over large areas or under dressings can allow enough steroid to enter the body to suppress adrenal gland function. Do not use it for acne, rosacea or untreated infections.
Seek advice for pus, spreading lesions, blurred vision or worsening after application. After prolonged treatment, discuss stopping or restarting with the doctor, as rebound inflammation can occur. Ask for advice during pregnancy and avoid applying it to the breast while breastfeeding. Facial swelling or breathing difficulty requires urgent help.
