Silibinin (or silybin) is the main active component of silymarin, an extract derived from the seeds of the Silybum marianum plant (milk thistle). It is primarily used for liver protection and regeneration, possessing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. It is indicated for the treatment of liver conditions such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, liver intoxications, and fatty liver disease.

Silibinin works by neutralizing free radicals and stabilizing the cell membranes of hepatocytes (liver cells), thereby preventing toxins from entering the cells. It also stimulates protein synthesis in the liver, promoting the regeneration of damaged liver tissue.

This compound is available in the form of capsules, tablets, or oral solutions, usually taken 2-3 times a day, depending on the doctor’s recommendations and the severity of the condition. Long-term use is often necessary to achieve maximum benefits.

Silibinin is generally well-tolerated, but mild side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal discomfort may occur. Allergic reactions are rare but can happen in individuals sensitive to plants in the Asteraceae family (which includes milk thistle).

This supplement does not replace standard medical treatments for liver diseases but can be used as an adjunct. It is important for patients to consult a doctor before starting treatment, especially if they have other medical conditions or are taking medications that may interact with silibinin.
