Indicated for: allergic rhinitis; urticaria
Substance: ketotifen (antihistamine)
ATC: R06AX17 (Respiratory system | Antihistamines for systemic use | Other antihistamines for systemic use)
Ketotifen is an antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer used for the prevention of allergic asthma and the treatment of allergic symptoms such as rhinitis and conjunctivitis. It works by blocking H1 histamine receptors and inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators involved in allergic reactions.
It is primarily used for long-term therapy in allergic asthma and allergic eye and nasal conditions. Ketotifen does not provide immediate bronchodilation, but regular use can reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.
It is administered orally in tablet or syrup form and is also available as eye drops for allergic conjunctivitis. Compared to other antihistamines, it may cause more pronounced sedation in some patients.
Side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and weight gain. It is not recommended for acute asthma attacks and requires regular administration for optimal benefits.
