The combination of ornithine and aspartate is used in the treatment of liver disorders, particularly to reduce elevated blood ammonia levels (hyperammonemia) associated with acute or chronic liver failure. It is commonly used in hepatic encephalopathy, a severe complication of liver diseases that affects brain function.
- Ornithine is an amino acid that stimulates the urea cycle, the process by which ammonia is detoxified and converted into urea, which is then excreted in the urine.
- Aspartate is another amino acid that contributes to ammonia metabolism, facilitating its conversion into non-toxic compounds such as glutamine.
This combination helps lower blood ammonia levels, thereby protecting the brain from its toxic effects. It also improves liver function and supports the regeneration of liver cells.
Side effects are rare but may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, or allergic reactions. In general, the combination of ornithine and aspartate is well-tolerated by most patients.
