Indicated for: vulvovaginal candidiasis
Substance: butoconazole (antifungal)
ATC: G01AF15 (Genito urinary system and sex hormones | Antiinfectives and antiseptics, excl. combinations with corticosteroids | Imidazole derivatives)
Butoconazolum is an antifungal medication used for the treatment of vaginal infections caused by Candida. It belongs to the imidazole class and works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, leading to fungal destruction.
The medication is administered as a vaginal cream, usually once daily, as directed by a doctor. The treatment is short-term, and patients must strictly follow the prescribed regimen.
Common side effects include local irritation, itching, or a burning sensation. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur.
Butoconazolum is not recommended for pregnant women during the first trimester unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Patients should inform their doctor about any other medications being used to avoid drug interactions.
