About this active substance
Econazole is an antifungal used for skin infections such as athlete's foot, cutaneous candidiasis and pityriasis versicolor. Vaginal preparations are also available for thrush. The medicine disrupts fungal cell membranes. Skin and vaginal formulations have different instructions and should not be substituted automatically.
Apply skin cream to clean, dry skin as directed; treatment commonly lasts 2–4 weeks. Vaginal products must be used according to their own schedule. Complete the recommended course even if itching improves. Avoid the eyes and mouth; vaginal pessaries must not be swallowed. Keeping the skin dry helps prevent recurrence.
Side effects may include stinging, burning, itching, redness or local pain. Contact dermatitis and allergic reactions can occur. Tell the doctor if you take warfarin or acenocoumarol, because more frequent monitoring of the anticoagulant effect may be needed. Some vaginal preparations can damage latex condoms and contraceptive diaphragms.
Stop using the product if irritation is severe; facial swelling or breathing difficulty requires urgent help. Seek medical advice if infection persists, frequently returns, or is accompanied by fever or pelvic pain.
