A01AB17 metronidazole • Alimentary tract and metabolism | Stomatological preparations | Antiinfectives and antiseptics for local oral treatment

Metronidazole is an antimicrobial medication used to treat infections caused by protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. It belongs to the nitroimidazole class and works by damaging the DNA of susceptible microorganisms, thereby inhibiting their growth and reproduction.

Metronidazole is indicated for the treatment of conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amoebiasis, dental infections, abscesses, peritonitis, and postoperative infections. It is also used in combination with other medications to treat Helicobacter pylori infection in gastric ulcers.

The medication is available in the form of tablets, gels, creams, suppositories, or injectable solutions, with the dosage and duration of treatment varying depending on the type and severity of the infection.

Common side effects include nausea, metallic taste, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. Rarely, allergic reactions or neurological disturbances, such as seizures or peripheral neuropathy, may occur. It is important to avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for 48 hours after completing it, as it may cause a severe adverse reaction (disulfiram-like effect). Metronidazole should be used as directed by a healthcare provider.
